2010 IFBB Australian Championships

With over 200 competitors and over two days I can only gloss over the standouts from this years IFBB Nationals — of which there were many.

Day 1.

Gary Wright, in his second ever competition and in the Novice class, absolutely smoked everybody. Big, hard and separated, this guy is a wide as he is tall. I am sure he will have a bright future when he now moves into weight classes.

ifbb2010-pic2

Men’s Masters was a blast from the past; Matt McLean was the best I have seen him in years. Glenn Guest, also back on stage, was great and our past national heavyweight champion Kim Rongonui only just missed out on a placing to Phillip Lloyd! Bruce Jones was the clear winner in the Over 50s.

ifbb2010-pic3

Novice figure had a massive 22 ladies. They were on stage for over 45 mins doing comparison after comparison so that the judges could get a good look and consider all in the massive line up. Terri-Anne Grey was the obvious choice and is very complete from head to toe, has great stage presence and fits nicely into what the IFBB wants from this division.

ifbb2010-pic4

Open Figure short was another big line up with Ellena Tsatsos obviously hitting the cardio hard to bring down her legs and tighten her condition to reverse the placings with Vania Primmer from the Salt Water Classic only weeks prior. Sara Picken-Brown rounded out the top three.

ifbb2010-pic5

The first ever National Bikini title was up for grabs and a strong lineup of 21 had come from around the country to battle this one out! WA’s Wendy Townsend has great structure, stage presence and walked away the first ever IFBB National Bikini winner, with Kristen Lonie second and Zoe Daly third.

ifbb2010-pic6

Jodie Parker clearly won the Open Figure Tall from an improved Kasia Chotkowska.

ifbb2010-pic7

Darwin’s Anthony Novak with his great X-frame and tight conditioning took out the Men’s Classic Class 2. Takis Venios seems to get better very year in the classic class 3 division and no-one was even close to him.

Day 2

Neil Gardner always looks best under 70 kg and Sung Seng Lay, although very sharp, didn’t have the mass to take the win away from Neil. Cuong Le tightened his package from the Queensland show and looked great.ifbb2010-pic9

The Under 80s was the closest field for the day. Greg Dwyer obviously increased his work rate after coming second to Shane Butt the week before in QLD and although he switched places with him this week, the Victorian Ange Galati got the nod from the judges. Ange had crazy conditioning!

ifbb2010-pic10

Women’s Over 55 kg was absolutely dominated by QLD’s Kahla Bullemor. Kahla was the most conditioned athlete of the whole weekend and clearly won the Overall women’s bodybuilding section.

ifbb2010-pic11

Ryan Kiang Kho just pipped NT’s Charlie Maillis in the Under 85’s. This could have gone either way with both the guys bringing their A-game. Charlie is only 23 years old and has plenty of time on his side and will no doubt have a national title in the not too distant future. INBA Pro Tim Martin rounded out the field and hats off to the man for mixing it with the big boys over the last few weeks within the IFBB!

ifbb2010-pic12

Under 90 kg saw Rohan Reid bring his best-ever package; Rohan is a beast and finally brought the balance of size and condition to take his first national title.

ifbb2010-pic13

In the Under 100 kg class, Eric McEntire was in the best condition I have seen him in but Christian Gee was just that bit drier and walked away with the win.

ifbb2010-pic14

Over 100 was awesome! Scotty Goble completed an awesome season by adding a national title to his impressive resume. Scott is such a great poser and a delight to watch on stage. Daryll Tomuli came second; this guy has the size and structure to make it as a pro but he really needs someone in his corner to nail the diet if he wants to go further! He has the best shoulder-to-waist ratio I have seen in years.

ifbb2010-pic15

It was great to see all the winners of the classes return on stage to judge an overall winner. Ellena Tsastos claimed the Figure, Kahla Bullemor the female bodybuilding and Ange Galati the Men’s. Let’s hope that this continues in the years to come, as the crowd loved it.

Phil Heath was the international guest poser over the two days and he won a legion of fans, not only with his awesome physique but also from his demeanour; as he is one of the most grounded, friendly pro’s I have had the pleasure of meeting. Lets just hope Tony Doherty can secure him at the Melbourne Pro show in March.

ifbb2010-pic16

In closing, I must mention that the 2010 IFBB Nationals was one of the biggest for the IFBB in many years which can only be good for bodybuilding as a whole. Congrats to all involved and let’s look forward to continued improvements for the betterment of our sport.
