Striation Nation: INBA Australian Championships 2010

The gathered throng at the Glen Eira Town Hall was massive. Sponsor’s stalls were set up at the back and to the sides of the auditorium but all eyes were on the stage and the natural muscle that was on display.

The format of the show was to have half the divisions in ‘Show 1’ and the other half in ‘Show 2’, with a short break between them, yet a ticket to each show was a separate charge. This was ostensibly so that family and friends of competitors would not have to purchase one more-expensive tickets if they couldn’t stay for the both shows. The posing routines were not compulsory and, in fact, only an option for the top three competitors in any division. This meant that the judging panel moved through the divisions at a faster rate than some other competitions. The judging was quite formal, with INBA Queensland’s Jason Woodforth taking the ladies and gents through their quarter turns and compulsory poses efficiently.

Being an all-Australian show, there were cheers for different states when competitors from various states stepped onto the stage. They hadn’t travelled all that way just to sit still and politely applaud. They were on their feet and giving it their all.

Every so often INBA Victorian promoter Tony Lanciano appeared and threw out Lindt chocolates or protein shakers into the audience. Iron Man 12-month subscriptions were also given out during the day.

The Teenage Men division was won by NSW’s PJ Lee, while VIC’s Philip Meering placed second and Lucas Kucharski from the ACT placed third. The posedown for this division was to the old WWE Raw theme song, Across the Nation by the Union Underground.

In the Junior Men’s, South Australia’s Ben Wortley and his athletic frame came out on top, with VIC’s Trent Davidson coming second. Third was taken out by QLD’s Tobias Frank Gale.

The Master Women Physique category is for women over 40. Vicky Turner from VIC placed first, with a nice balance of muscularity and femininity. Jody Curtis (QLD) and Sharon Storen (ACT) placed second and third respectively.

It was at this point that the SportsModel division medals were awarded. This class had kicked off proceedings with the bikini round and now it was time for the Sportswear round. Victoria’s Stacey Hansen came out with the first place medal. Queensland’s Kirra Longmuir placed second, while New South Wales’ Andrea Cooze placed third.

The Women’s Physique Open was taken out by Noula Petraca from VIC, whose routine was to Justin Timberlake’s Sexyback. Second place was won by Fimka Hampson, while Freda Mazzon placed third. When the Women’s Physique Overall title was awarded, Noula again came out on top, being named Ms Physique.

The Master Men (50-59) division was won by VIC’s Tony Haranas, whose Iron Man-themed (Iron Man superhero mask and the song Iron Man by Black Sabbath) routine was a good display of his excellent physique. WA’s Wayne Britton placed second in this division, while Peter Sargent from QLD placed third.

The Master Men (60+) was a great showcase of mature muscle. Robert Walkley from QLD took out the top medal, with NSW’s Carey Greentree winning second and Harry Haureliuk in third. Fourth place was Ian Nordahl, who enjoyed himself as much as the others in a very fun and energetic posedown (to Eye of the Tiger).

The Ms. Figure Master (50-59) was a very even field; all competitors had excellent figures. Perhaps a higher standard is to be expected at a national-level comp, but it was still good to see. In the end, it was the ACT’s Kay Wiseman who won the top prize. Debbie Dunkley, representing SA, took away second and QLD’s Deborah McCarthy came in third.

The Novice Men category, for competitors in their first year of competition, was a big line-up, with 10 bodies of quality muscle. SA’s Bill Cairns won this division, with Bradley Leat (QLD) and Abdul Beeza (WA) placing second and third respectively.

In the Ms. Figure Intermediate division, the audience was treated to a range of quite different figures. Victoria’s Chelsea Thomas, with great abs and a pretty face, took out the top spot; her posing routine was to competition staple Dirty Diana. SA’s Susan Stringer’s hard body won her second, and Tasmania’s Bridget Freeman came in third.

The Intermediate Men’s division was another big line-up of quality muscle on bodies, which must have been very tough to judge. Victoria’s Aaron Curtis, with an impressive physique and a particularly ripped abdominal pose, came away with first place. WA’s Jack Miles placed second and the ACT’s Tony Rusan placed third.

With 10 competitors in the Ms Figure Novice, the future of this division looks bright. Queensland took out the top two spots, with Terri Anne Grey first and Susie Calcino second. Tasmania’s Mandy Francisty placed third in a hotly contested line-up.

From the new to the experienced: in the Master Men (40-49) class, SA’s Carlos Azevedo wore the gold medal, with Tony Geammal (NSW) in silver and Craig Winter (WA) in bronze.

The Ms. Figure Master (40-49) division was full of lovely ladies not looking their ages. Debbie Andrews from WA took out first, while Victoria’s Karen Flaherty placed second, with QLD’s Mary Louise Currie in third.

Now it was time for the Mr. Australia and Ms. Figure classes. Lots of quality physiques in the women, with a nice balance of muscle, symmetry and loveliness, while on the male side of things, everyone had brought their A-game and conditioning to make this show a professional (though amateur) one. In Mr. Australia Class 1, Queensland got the edge over Victoria with Shaun Mason taking the gold. Second and third were won by Victorian representatives Matt Nicholson and Jim Mathiopoulos.

Ms. Figure Open Class 1, NSW’s Yvonne Napoli took out first, with SA’s Tracy West in second and Marina Boutzos from the ACT in third.

In Mr Australia Class 2 it was South Australia vs. Victoria with VIC’s Justin Firgaira getting up and SA’s Duncan Rankine and Gary Gleggett taking second and third respectively.

MrAusClass2top3_body-image

Ms. Figure Open Class 2 was won by Michelle Fuller (QLD), followed by Victorians Lucy Hermans and Jane Watts.

MsFigureOpenClass2top3_body-image

Mr Australia Class 3 was taken out by Obi Akintaju (VIC), with Mike Sloan (QLD) and Ryan Fredricks (WA) in second and third.

MrAusClass3line-up_body-image

Ms Figure Open Class 3 was won by VIC’s Clare Ross and her fantastic abdominals. Second was taken by QLD’s Sara Symonds and Maria Andriano from NSW wore the bronze.

Mr Australia Class 4 was a win for Victoria, with Grant Davidson in first and Steve Faatau in third. Queensland’s Robert Schmidt was in the middle with the silver.

With those amazing classes done and dusted, it was time for the Overalls. No, not your dad’s gardening clothes, the INBA championships! Both overall titles were won by Victorians: INBA Ms. Figure Australia was awarded to Clare Ross, while the INBA Mr. Australia shield was handed to Justin Firgaira, who held it aloft above his head in triumph.

The INBA Aussies had a huge line-up and it was a long day in the end, but there were tonnes of quality muscle up on the stage and Tony Lanciano and all the other state promoters should be very happy for running a tight ship. See you next year!
